High Hopes

Welcome.
Hi. If you've found this blog, you're either a friend of mine or a crazy cat lover like myself. Or both, but I doubt it.
I've created this blog for the purpose of documenting the last years of my cat, Sebastian, and the first years of my kitten, Grace.
Sebastian was born 14 years ago in my childhood bedroom. My favourite book as a child was 'Sebastian: A Tale of a Curious Kitten' by Vanessa Julian-Ottie. I received this book in the first Grade and for years I wanted a kitten named Sebastian. When my cat, Pretty, became pregnant, I knew I was going to give one of the kittens this name. Pretty gave birth to two identical tabby-and-white kittens and we named them Sebastian and Alexander. Sebastian we kept, and Alex went to live with a neighbour. It was months later that we realized Sebastian was a girl (I don't know why we assumed she was a he) and that her name was not really suitable. We tried to change her name to Sebastiana but that's a mouthful and it never stuck, so Sebastian she remained. People name their little girls "Fred", "Charlie", "Joey" and other boys names, so why couldn't I do the same with my kitten?
Bastian became my best friend and has been with me all through my growing up years. She's been by my side through puberty, high school, college, first loves, first apartments, first break-ups, family tragedy and now, 14 years later, I am 24 and newly married and Bastian remains my constant companion. She is loved by many, especially my husband, who is a dog-person, and even by my mother-in-law, an admitted cat-hater. She is my friend, my family, and though she is a senior by cat standards, she still has the energy of a kitten and has quite some time left in her life. I am starting this blog to record all the ups and downs of her last years as the most loved cat on earth.
Also featured in this blog will be my new kitten, Grace. My husband and I adopted Grace two days ago from our local SPCA, but have yet to bring her home. You see, Gracie has a cold and isn't allowed to come home until she's all better. It will still be about 10 days before Gracie can start her new life with us. So stay tuned.
